Happy Happy Hour

Roots

A work colleague suggested I go to Roots as he knows I love really good food.  So I stopped in for happy hour before a meeting I had to attend.  I like happy hour because it is a good way to try out a place before laying down the big bucks for dinner.  I arrived at 3:15 and there were only a few people there, but by the time I was ready to leave about 4:30 it was getting on the busy side.

What did I have?

My 1st Cocktail was an Old Fashion with Basil Hayden. $6.25 I am still learning to drink Whisky, Scotch and Bourbon but this was a really well made.

I just had a Starter as it was Happy Hour; I had the Herbed-Goat Cheese and Olives $6.  The olives were super flavorful because they were service really hot.  The cheese was just right and the portion was perfect for what I was looking for.

My 2nd drink was one the bartender came up with after I requested something with grapefruit juice.  It was grapefruit, tequila & Aperol, it hit the spot. $9.50

The total for my meal was $21.75 with $1.83 in tax for a total bill of $23.58 and I left a tip of $7 which is 32%, (See my post this coming weekend on my tipping thoughts). So the total for this happy hour was $30.58.

My Score for the afternoon is 90.875 out of 100.  Here is a breakdown of the score:

Website:                          Score 8.875 out of 10
Points taken off for not having a presence on social media other then Facebook (-.625).  Also .5 point for only having a 4.5 out of 5 score on Trip Advisor.  My TripAdvisor review will be a 5.

Addressing Allergies:     Score 5 out of 10
Tomatoes were not an issue on the item that I ordered, but unfortunately there is no Gluten Free Options.  (-5)

Not liking something:     Score 10 out of 10
I really loved everything so there wasn't anything that I can complain about.

Suggestions:                    Score 10 out of 10
Boy did I run the bartender through the ringer and he passed with flying colors.  I wasn't sure what I wanted and asked what drink he made the best.  He asked if I drank whiskey, which I am working on learning to drink, he said he asked because he made a really good old fashion.  He is right he does make a really good one!

Service:                           Score 10 out of 10
I sat at the bar and the bartender was my server.  He was great.  He made me a couple of really good drinks, and paid a great deal of attention to me.  We chatted about all kinds of things and different alcohols to try.

Food:                               Score 9 out of 10
The food was great; the olives weren't just warm they were hot, which really increased the flavor. The herbed cheese was nicely done and I will have it again.  My only mark down is for the bread just being a tiny bit burnt, not bad but enough to get that flavor and it was only on a little bit of a couple pieces.  (-1)

Drinks:                            Score 9 out of 10
Had two really yummy drinks, the only thing I am marking down is the fact that I asked for a drink made with grapefruit juice and the bartender drew a blank. (-1) But to his credit, he goggled it and even found one that was with Aperol which I had told him earlier that I liked.

Value:                             Score 10 out of 10
This score is based on my fixed scale of total points to overall cost of a meal per person.  A meal is a starter, entrée, 1 cocktail, 1 glass of wine and dessert.  Root's average price per meal is $66 putting them in the $$$ category.  The overall score without the value figured in is 80.875, which earns the score of 10 for value.

     Decor/View:                   Score 9 out of 10
The décor is modern with lots of clean lines.  The view is of a parking lot, but they have a beautiful patio that makes it disappear.  Problem was there was a hornets' nest and they were advising people to not sit out there.  (-1)

Cleanliness:                    Score 10 out of 10
I did not check the ladies room, but the dining room and bar was tidy and clean.

Pros:                                                                           Cons:
   1.  Bartender was great and very attentive          1.  Hornets nest on patio
   2.  Allergies can be addressed by kitchen             2.  No Gluten Free Bread
   3.  Great food well prepared                                   3.  Long way from my house……
   4.  The HH Menu really great value                     4.  Drink prices are not on website menu
   5.   Lot of choices at varying ranges                    5.  Limited alcohol choices because of space

I was very impressed with all of the staff at Roots; everyone was super friendly and willing to jump through the hoops for their customers.  The food was perfect and I will be back as often as I can get back over the river.
